St Vincent Island

St Vincent Island is the mother island of the Caribbean country of St Vincent and the Grenadines. The Grenadine Islands run north to south from the tip of Saint Vincent Island to the Island of Grenada.

Only two of the Grenadines belong to Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique; the rest are part of the previously mentioned country.

Things to do in St Vincent Island

• St Vincent is one of the few places of earth where you may find black beaches on one side and white beaches on the other.• Whale lovers will be enchanted with Barrouallie, a fascinating whaling village and Wallilabou another fishing village with spectacular views of the Bay.

Fort Charlotte, a British fort dating from 1806, the Kingstown Methodist Church, and St Mary’s Cathedral of the Assumption, dating from the nineteenth century, are also worth a visit.

• An important visit for those nature lovers should be the two botanical gardens on the island, the Montreal Gardens and the Botanical Garden in Kingstown, which is the oldest of its kind in this part of the world.

Hiking is one of many attractions on the island. Like hike to the top of the Volcano La Soufriere. It takes about four hours, but it’s worth the effort. One more attraction is the sixty feet high Baleine Falls and swimming at the bottom of the falls.

• The capital city of Kingstown is by itself an attraction with many churches and archaeology museums showing the vast history of the islands since they were inhabited by the Arawaks Indians.

A trip to the Arawaks Rock Carving and the Black Point tunnel is also a great experience.
