Samana Peninsula Samana peninsula has it all besides white sands an azure waters, the coconut covered mountains coming down direct to the sea. When the season of whale watching comes, Samana is the right place to be. It is recognized as the best place to be in the Caribbean for such a show from nature. There is a small airport called El Portillo with commuter flights to the capital Santo Domingo. A few years ago an International Airport was open at El Catey receiving tourists direct from Europe, mainly German and Italian tourists, as well as tourists from the USA and Canada. Another way is arriving into Santo Domingo, Aru and Santiago Dominican Republic airports and rent a car for the easy driving to Samana. There are some inexpensive means of travel by bus, but I do not recommend them for the new visitors inexperienced with the country and the language. Getting around Samana Dominican Republic can be seen on foot or by taxi. The best idea is to rent your own vehicle or even better a 4x4 jeep to take advantage of the possibility of driving through the sandy roads of the northwest side of the peninsula.
