Puerto Rico Travel

A paradise under the American Flag

Puerto Rico Travel is my passion. We lived in Puerto Rico for 28 years and were involved in the Travel Industry with a Top Travel Agency in Old San Juan, for almost all those years.

The fact that all Puerto Ricans are American Citizens and that passengers coming from USA and Canada don’t need any visa is by itself one of the greatest advantages of Puerto Rico Travel.

exotic

Puerto Rico Travel is a must for so many reasons, that it would take many articles to enumerate. Its people, its beaches, its people, its mountains, el morro, el yunque, and I can keep going with no end.

The people are friendly. They speak mainly Spanish but English is widely spoken. The US Dollar is the currency and the American Flag flies proudly next to the Puerto Rican Flag.

Getting there

Puerto Rico Travel by Air

Puerto Rico is one of the islands most visited by travelers from all over. The main entrance is through “Luis Muñoz Marin” International Airport to the east of San Juan.

I saw how this airport developed from a simple little one in the 1960’s to one of most modern and active airports under the American Flag.

Flights arrive from North America, Europe, South and Central America and the Caribbean Islands on a regular basis. There are many Non-Stop flights from an array of North American cities.

New York was the first city connecting with Puerto Rico. Today the flights arrive from as far a Seattle or Miami; Charlotte or Chicago and so on.

There is the airport Rafael Hernandez Airport in what once was the US Ramey Air force Base. It is located in the northwestern city of Aguadilla. It features the longest runway in the Caribbean. Many US airlines offer their services to Aguadilla (BQN).

The major cities like Ponce in the south and Mayaguez in the west have their smaller airports that receive internal flights and some time have had direct flight from the US mainland.

Puerto Rico Travel by cruise

San Juan is one of the busiest ports in America for the volume of cruise passengers. Many Cruise Lines have San Juan on their Eastern Caribbean Cruises itineraries.

The ports of Miami-Fort Lauderdale are the Cruise Capital. San Juan comes in second.

Carnival Cruises, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International offer weekly flights starting in San Juan to the Southern Caribbean islands like Barbados, Aruba, St Lucia, Curacao, to name a few

Getting around

By Air

Some people use air to go from one city to another, but I think that mostly the business people do that. As a tourist you’ll want to tour this paradisaical island step by step.

Even if you want to visit the neighboring islands of Culebra and Vieques, you may do it by ferry from Fajardo, or may fly out of San Juan.

Puerto Rico has some local airports. They are located in the following cities throughout the island.

• Aeropuerto Internacional Luis Muñoz Marín - Carolina (San Juan)

• Aeropuerto Fernando L. Ribas Dominicci - Isla Grande (San Juan)

• Aeropuerto Rafael Hernández - Aguadilla

• Aeropuerto Eugenio María de Hostos - Mayaguez

• Aeropuerto Mercedita - Ponce

• Aeropuerto Antonio Rivera Rodríguez - Vieques

• Aeropuerto Humacao - Humacao

• Aeropuerto Diego Jimenez Torres - Fajardo

• Aeropuerto Benjamin Rivera Noriega - Culebra

• Aeropuerto Antonio Juarbe - Arecibo

The typical Garitas keep watching over the cities of Puerto Rico

By ferry

Puerto Rico has under its jurisprudence two very important islands: Vieques the larger and Culebra the smaller one. They are called the Spanish Virgin Islands and are very near the east coast city of Fajardo.

Government operated ferries service the two islands by ferry on a regular basis.

Once in Old San Juan you may take the ferry to the city of Cataño on the other side across the San Juan Bay. It is an interesting tour of going, walking the town and coming back to Old San Juan. My parents use to live in Cataño, so it was a regular tour for me and my family.

By Taxi

Taxis are well regulated by the government and they are reliable and in good condition. The drivers are friendly and knowledgeable of their country or their city.

By Rental car

Ask me and I’ll tell you that there is no better way to explore the island as with a rental car.

In 1967 when we arrived for the first time in Puerto Rico I took my first Toyota car, my wife and two little girls and drove around the island, going west to Mayaguez, back east to Ponce and Humacao and then north and west back to San Juan. We did this in about 14 hours.

Please don’t do that. This is not the way to explore Puerto Rico. There are so many places to visit and so many little or big hotels to stay at that is worth the time. You may also stay at the famous Paradores as in Spain. This the English concept of Bed and Breakfast.

All major Car Rental Companies serve Puerto Rico without exception, besides the many local companies, that will strive for your business. Their offices are not only at the International Airports but they have office in many towns and cities. Your Puerto Rico travel will be incomplete without your rental car.

By Bus

Bus service in Puerto Rico is fair, but I seldom saw tourists using the services to tour the island. Mostly locals use the services of the buses besides the cars called “carros publicos” that link many cities with 5 to 7 passengers on board.

By Bikes and scooters

As I mentioned, Puerto Rico Travel is so varied. The island has so many mountains, so many trails and such beautiful beaches that you want to visit one by one.

What better than a scooter or a bike to visit those sites that cars or buses don't reach? Or navigate the narrow streets of some towns and cities. Bikes or scooters may be rented all over the island.

Weather in Puerto Rico

The climate is absolutely tropical. It is warm all year round. But it never goes above the low nineties because of the eternal breezes coming from the east.

I don’t remember ever wearing a sweater during my whole 28 years living in Puerto Rico. In the months of December to March it could be a little cooler and people are very happy to have this “friito” or “little cold”, but it never goes below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

The exception is the towns on the central mountains especially the picturesque town of Aibonito that gets much cooler evenings.

The rains in Puerto Rico are tropical rains. They start and stop in practically minutes. Remember my saying:

“If you were going to the beach and it starts to rain, keep going to the beach”

The tourist season for Puerto Rico Travel runs from December 15 to April 15, when all the northerners want to escape from the horrible snow blizzards and bitter cold. So you better look at the pictures in my site and start planning your trip.
