Puerto Rico is almost a rectangle long from east to west and narrow from north to south. Northeast Coast from San Juan to Fajardo This shore faces the Atlantic Ocean. The north side has been exposed to northerly swells and has only a few dive sites. Divers staying in the San Juan and Carolina areas are usually taken to the Eastern corner of Fajardo and las Croabas and to the tiny little sisters of Vieques and Culebra. Puerto Rico Diving is for professionals and beginners alike Vieques and Culebra In Vieques or Culebra Puerto Rico, a local tour operator will take you to the best diving sites. To get to any of the two isles, the best way is to drive to Fajardo and take the public ferry which is cheap and efficient. You may leave Fajardo early morning; do your diving during the day and return back in the early evening. In Culebra’s coat lies a sunken tugboat call the Wit Power only 40 feet below surface. It is very accessible and full of corals and marine life, because it has been there since 1984. Then in front of famous Flamenco Beach is a spectacular coral with turtles, fish and other species. You may also visit the Geniqui Caves and explore underwater tunnels. And last but not least the many cayos or keys around Culebra are worth a visit. Around Vieques’ coast some of the best diving sites are Anchor, Angel and Blue Tang Reefs. You may also see Cayo Afuera that can be seen from Esperanza Beach. In general Vieques diving spots are for beginners or for easy diving.
Puerto Rico Diving on its southern coast Here is a great place for Scuba Diving Puerto Rico. What is known as Puerto Rico’s Wall runs parallel to the south shore and can be reached by boat. The best area is towards the west, between Guanica and La Parguera. The wall is 22 miles long with drop offs of more than 1,500 feet and great visibility from 60 to 150 feet. You may see there the Fallen Rock, which is an underwater hill that separated thousands of years ago and carved a deep trench in the ocean floor. In that passage the array of fish and marine life to be seen is awe inspiring including sharks, moray eels, octopi and forests of black coral orchids. This area is becoming a popular diving site for people who know where to go when it comes to diving. The boat ride to “The Wall” takes about 20 minutes and it is worth the effort.

Puerto Rico Diving on its Western Coast There are two islets on the Mona Chanel that runs between the Republica Dominicana and Puerto Rico. They are La Mona Island and Desecheo a smaller one. I must warn you that first the Mona Chanel is very treacherous. The strong currents are incredible. So, that said, you have to prepare well for a diving trip to Mona and Desecheo. Go only with professionals and only when they say that the weather is OK. Also along the western coat of the island’s mainland there are very good diving sites at a much closer distance. Mona Island has been called Puerto Rico’s Galapagos. It is an uninhabited island about 50 miles west of the city of Mayaguez. It features iguanas, seabirds and turtles. And underwater the spectacle is even more interesting showing hundreds of species of fish. Only during winter you may spot a few humpback whales with their young, swimming around. Desecheo Island is about an hour boat ride from Rincon in the Porta del Sol region, the famous beach for surfers. This island is for expert divers and offers idyllic coral reefs and plenty of marine life.
