Puerto Plata Dominican Republic is lined by the Malecon or waterfront boulevard, like in Santo Domingo and it features many open air restaurants and shops.
The world renowned sites around the city are Cofresi, Maimon, Luperon, Playa Dorada, Sosua, Cabarete and Playa Grande.
Getting to Puerto Plata Dominican Republic
Getting there is very easy due to the many airports the visitors can use. First of all the nearest one a few miles to the west of the city is Gregorio Luperon International Airport.
Santiago’s Cibao International Airport about one hour south is also very convenient.
Between the two airports there are flights arriving from all over the world. Some are schedule airlines and some are charters.
I have been waiting at the Luperon Airport and have been a witness of about 10 jumbo jets lined up arriving or departing to every corner of Europe.

From North America there are flights operated by American Airlines, Continental, Ryan International, Air Canada and Air Transat among others.
To and from the Caribbean Islands American Eagle is the main service provider.

Whale watching in Puerto Plata Dominican Republic
There is a very rare experience to be seen in the north coast of Hispaniola, the humpback whales from the North Atlantic return to the area every year during the months January to April.
Here in the waters of the Republica Dominicana they mate and give birth. At some point about 1,500 of them circulating in the area, being the most popular of all places is Silver Bank an enormous reef northeast of Puerto Plata.
Another good spot for whale watchers is the Bay of Samana, distant 2 and a half mile.

Telesferico
Cable car in English takes you close to 3,000 feet up the mountain for a breathtaking panoramic view of the town and its surroundings.
On the top you may visit the Isabel de Torres Botanic Gardens with enormous ferns, big flowers and giant hibiscus, a paradise for those into Ecotourism.
They also feature a restaurant, souvenir shops and last but not least the statue of Christ that will remind you the one on top of the Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro.
Fuerte San Felipe
San Felipe Fort in English, located on a small peninsula on the Bay of Puerto Plata and one of the few vestiges of Puerto Plata colonial past.
They host a museum and you’ll see the small cell where Juan Pablo Duarte the hero of Independence was confined.
Brugal Rum Factory
This is the largest Rum factory in the Republica Dominicana. You may want to take a tour of the premises to observe the manufacturing process.
At the end you’ll be offered a Daiquiri and may be you’ll want to buy the best rums at much lower prices.
The Amber Museum
It shows one of the best amber collections in the world, like the mosquito inside the amber that Steven Spielberg used for the film Jurassic park and many more

Nightlife in Puerto Plata Dominican Republic
It is quite active featuring many clubs where Salsa and Merengue are the Queen and King of the evening. The Hosts will mix also international music for the delight of all concerned. A must in the Playa Dorada area is Mangu, You may want to visit the casino at Hotel Playa Dorada and paradise Hotel.
The Playa Dorada has an 18 hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones and also Los Mangos golf course. One of the best in the Caribbean is the Playa Grande Golf Course. This last one is about an hour and a half drive from Puerto Plata and worth the drive.
Scuba Diving
The water temperature is always ranging from 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, making the area very popular for Scuba Diving. They’ll find here shallow reefs, shipwrecks. But really serious divers will want to go west to the area of Monte Cristi.

Beaches
Playa Dorada – This is where the most hotels are concentrated in the north of the Republic. You’ll find many low rise beaches resorts built in a “U” form and share the same white sand beach. They also have the Playa Dorada Golf Course.
Walking in the area is safe and in the Playa Dorada Plaza you’ll find shops, resturants and Movie Theater.
Costa Dorada - This neighbor of Playa Dorada hosts a few All Inclusive Resorts and they pride themselves as the owners of the most beautiful beach in the area.
Cofresi – To the west of Puerto Plata it is home to a few smaller hotels and some residencial compounds. Here you can use their Beach facilities.
Maimon – Is located near Cofresi Beach and here are located the all new All Inclusive Resorts. This beach is for those seeking a laid back ambience where the exotic beaches are the main attraction.
Luperon – Is mainly for sailboats that have discovered the safety of the harbor. It is a relaxed community and in the last few years has attracted many foreigners that had made it their home.
