Port Antonio Jamaica

Port Antonio Jamaica is located in the eastern extreme of the island. It is the capital of Portland Parish and just 87 km or 60 miles northeast of Kingston the Capital of Jamaica.

The area is considered a tropical rainforest region and it’s still underdeveloped as compared with Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril Beach Jamaica. Some say that it is here where you feel the real Jamaica in the warmth of its people.

Breathtaking Reach Falls near Port Antonio

Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament

If you want some action and to blend with the local population try downtown where the vendors sell everything you can imagine and will gladly show you around for a reasonable tip.

The area features souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes and nightclubs. Once there don’t miss the local food that may be a little to “hot” for the American taste, but worth a try.

Now with the great marina built in 2006 they attract many visitors, especially for the annual Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament.

Another event is the local Jerk Festival showing the marvels of Jamaica Food like Jerk Chicken or Jerk Pork, so delicious but again, so “hot”.

Beaches of Port Antonio Jamaica

Port Antonio has some of the best Jamaica Beaches with the background of the Blue Mountains and tropical rainforests, that serve as frames to the many coves and the beaches are laid back and relaxed.

• Frenchman's Cove

It is located 7 km from downtown Port Antonio. Thanks to this beach Port Antonio is being recognized among the beach lovers as a new place besides Negril and the other famous beach cities.

The beach is of powdery white sands and the whole experience is more serene, a reminiscent of what Ochee and MoBay used to be decades ago.

This is such a beautiful beach surrounded by lush vegetation that it has been showed in films like “The Mighty Quinn” with Denzel Washington and “Club Paradise” with Robin Williams

• Winnifred Beach

This beach is popular with locals and its friendly and laid back with small shops with cool drinks, food, souvenirs and hand crafted items.

The beach is in the middle of two peninsulas and the waters are turquoise blue. There is a reef that is used by snorkelers and scuba divers. During weekends they also offer horse riding opportunities.

• Long Bay Jamaica

It is located about 40 minutes drive eastbound from Port Antonio Jamaica. It is a fishing village where may still make their living out of the sea. You can see the fishing boats and canoes going back and forth from the shores.

Many of them will take you for a fee to tour into the bay that could be a great experience. This beach was used to film the cable movie “Treasure Island”

This is an offshore island that you may swim to from Long Bay Beach. The beach is so pristine and quiet that it is worth the swim. They say that some big developers are trying to get the permission to build on the islands. What a pity…

• Reach Falls Jamaica

This is one of the most beautiful spots in Jamaica. The Rio Grande River comes rushing down with waters of the Blue Mountains surrounded by lush forests comes down as amazing falls that have been presented in many movies before.

It is still a tranquil sight where to spend a nice afternoon. The level of cascading varies so you may adapt to your tastes and possibilities.

It is now protected and managed by the Urban Developing Corporation and they have established many rules for the visitors besides an entrance fees.

I always think that this is for the best, because if you obey the rules we will be able to enjoy the falls for many years to come.

You may do some rafting floating down the river on a handmade bamboo raft as your trusted raft guide teaches you how to do it. Here is where you confirm how beautiful the Island of Jamaica is and why so many millions of visitors come here year after year.

• Blue Lagoon

This popular sight is a 200 feet deep lagoon. This is a natural lagoon with a mystical blue color due to the extreme depths of its waters. At some point it seemed to be bottomless, but years ago the divers did bound a bottom close to 200 feet deep.

Swimming here is quite an experience because you are caressed by warm water streams from the Caribbean Sea mixed with very cool ones coming from the depths of the lagoon.

Before Brooke Shields made her film “Blue Lagoon” here the place was called the Blue Hole and later adapted the name of the movie.
