Mayan Ruins Mexico
The Mayan Ruins Mexico are known all over the world. They are magnificent pieces of art of a far away era when the Mayans, the Aztecs and Toltec ruled over what today is the great country of Mexico. The Mayans were located in what today is the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. Some of them are surrounded by spectacular Caribbean Beaches. Click here to Share your Story

Chichen Itza Mexico is one of the most important Mayan Ruins Mexico
Tulum Ruins - One of the best kept sites of Mayan Ruins Mexico is Tulum. I have dedicated a separate page to such magnificent ruins. Please click here to go to Tulum Ruins. Coba – It is not so well known as Tulum but offers a lot more to see including temples and pyramids. It is located in the state of Quintana Roo, east of Chichen Itza Mexico about 40 Km west of the Caribbean Sea. This site located around two lagoons is home to various temple pyramids some of them the tallest in the Yucatan Peninsula. In its years of Glory, Coba had more than 50,000 inhabitants most of them dedicated to agriculture. Many of the temples were built later around the Seventh Century and they kept developing until the arrival of the Spanish conquerors to Mexican Beaches.

Tulum Ruins are located south of Playa del Carmen

Chichen Itza Mexico – The Non plus Ultra of Mayan Ruins Mexico and also most grandiose. Much restoration has been done and feature all kind of services for tourists like museums, restaurants and stores selling different items than those found in Playa del Carmen or Cancun It is a large complex of buildings separated by walls from one another. The best known is the Great North Platform featuring El Castillo, Temple of Warriors and Great Ball Court; The Osario Group including its namesake Pyramid and the Temple of Xtoloc; and finally the Central Group including Akab Dzib, Las Monjas and Caracol. The ruins of Chichen Itza are federal property, and the site’s stewardship is maintained by Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Historia y Antropología (INHA) Xcaret - is not a ruin site but an excellent place to learn about Mayan culture. We love this place and highly recommend it! Punta Laguna – On the same trip to Coba you may explore Punta Laguna and enjoy swimming in the lake. They also have a small museum. Xel Ha – The ruins are located south of the Xel Ha Eco-Park. Usually the tours go only to the Eco-Park but you take a bus (camion) to get there. Akumal – It is located past the town of Akumal on the west side of Highway 307. In places like this is inexpensive to take a taxi or a bus to visit it.

Xel Ha is a natural wonder and largest natural aquarium in the world.
Mexican Ruins Mexico
Ek Balam – This is an ancient Mayan City located about 120 miles (195 Km) west of Cancun and east of Merida. Restorations are on their way. Here you’ll find a number of structures including a backyard and ball court. The best way to visit is by renting a car, because even if you get there by bus, you’ll need to take a taxi from the bus station to get there. This site is unfortunately not so well known. It contains many sculpture with no comparison in the Yucatan area. This site is one of longest continuously inhabited community, dating from 100 BC until the Spanish Arrival. The Ek Balam Acropolis features great sculptures and is one of the tallest buildings in the area; therefore a view from the top is just unforgettable. A visit to Mayan Ruins Mexico should be divided in several trips with your center in Merida, Cancun or Playa del Carmen. I am sure you will enjoy it.
