Island of Montserrat
The Island of Montserrat is located near St Kitts Nevis and Antigua island in the Leeward Antilles. It is part of the British Territories in the Caribbean, together with Anguilla Island, Turks and Caicos and Cayman islands. On December 26, 1997, a British Holiday known as Boxing Day, as an unwelcome Christmas gift, the island woke up to the eruption of the Soufriere Hill’s Volcano. This caused an avalanche of volcanic debris over the nearby villages. The ash cloud covered the island.

Montserrat was discovered by Columbus in 1493 and settled by English and Irish colonists in 1632. After the black slaves arrived from Africa, the French and English armies fought for the island until it was confirmed as a British possession 150 years later. When in 1995 the Soufriere Hills Volcano began to erupt, most of the population abandoned the island for safer places like Antigua, St Kitts and remote countries like USA and Canada. The volcano is still active. The last serious eruption occurred in 2003
