Island of Montserrat

The Island of Montserrat is located near St Kitts Nevis and Antigua island in the Leeward Antilles.

It is part of the British Territories in the Caribbean, together with Anguilla Island, Turks and Caicos and Cayman islands.

On December 26, 1997, a British Holiday known as Boxing Day, as an unwelcome Christmas gift, the island woke up to the eruption of the Soufriere Hill’s Volcano.

This caused an avalanche of volcanic debris over the nearby villages. The ash cloud covered the island.

Montserrat was discovered by Columbus in 1493 and settled by English and Irish colonists in 1632. After the black slaves arrived from Africa, the French and English armies fought for the island until it was confirmed as a British possession 150 years later.

When in 1995 the Soufriere Hills Volcano began to erupt, most of the population abandoned the island for safer places like Antigua, St Kitts and remote countries like USA and Canada. The volcano is still active. The last serious eruption occurred in 2003

Flag Description

Blue, with the flag of the UK in the upper hoist-side quadrant and the Montserratian coat of arms centered in the outer half of the flag; the coat of arms features a woman standing beside a yellow harp with her arm around a black cross

Where to stay?

The number of hotels and guest houses is very limited. A great idea would be to rent a Villa. You’ll find a few properties very attractively priced. Many include maid service, pool, Cable TV, and more.

Festivals

The Luck of the Irish is celebrated for a full week leading to St Patrick’s Day on March 17. In this opportunity many of the islanders that moved away from the island, come back and reunite with loved ones enjoying the carnival-like festivities.

In the Island of Montserrat you’ll find the unique opportunity to watch an active volcano. By boat from the sea you’ll be able to see this actual Pompeii of the Caribbean.
