The Island of Grenada is part of a three island nation including Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
The island is also called the Spice Island, because of the amount and variety of spices grown on the island and distributed to the world.
When you land in Grenada you may experience the smell of nutmeg in the air. It is part of the Windward Islands, the southern part of the Lesser Antilles.
Grenada is the largest of the three, with a width of twelve miles (18 km) and a length of twenty-one miles (34 km). The total area is 133 square miles. The highest point is Mount Saint Catherine, at 2,757 feet.
Carriacou is much less mountainous than Grenada, with an area of 13 square miles and wonderful sandy beaches.

Some of you may remember when the Island of Grenada was seized by a Marxist military council on 19 October 1983.
Six days later the Grenada was invaded by US forces and those of six other Caribbean nations, which quickly captured the ringleaders and their hundreds of Cuban advisers.
Free elections were re-instituted the following year.
Grenada's population numbers about 100,000, comprising citizens of African, East Indian, and European descent. The largest proportion of the population, about 75%, is of African descent.
Weather
The climate is an eternal summer like in most of the Caribbean Islands and you’ll find very few variations. Grenada is a great destination year round.
The island as mentioned is full of lush vegetation, therefore has to be warm all year round with temperatures of average 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
The warmer months are March to October while the “winter” season with slightly cooler temperatures is from November to February.Average temperatures range from 24C/ 75F to 30C/ 87F, tempered by the steady and cooling trade winds.
The lowest temperatures occur between November and February. Because of Grenada's remarkable topography, the island also experiences climate changes according to altitude.
Government
Grenada is an independent nation part of the British Commonwealth and the Governor General represents Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The senate and House of Representatives are elected by the people.
Currency
The East Caribbean dollar is the currency used locally. It is linked to the US dollar. Its value varies.
Electricity
Voltage as in the UK is 220 volts – 50 cycles. Visitors from the US will need a transformer in order to use their appliances.

Where is the Island of Grenada?
The three islands of Grenada are located in the Southern Caribbean at the southern extremity of the Windward Islands, only 100 miles north of Venezuela.
Through Point Saline’s International Airport (GND) is located just outside the capital city of St George's, close to the resorts on Grand Anse Beach. The transfer takes between 10 to 15 minutes.
Many airlines have flights to Grenada's Point Saline’s International Airport. Smaller aircraft are used to fly to neighboring Carriacou.
By Sea
The main port city of St George's and its horseshoe shaped harbor called the Carenage receive many cruise ships that visit for the day.
The cruise business is growing and many cruise ships are stopping in Grenada on a regular basis.
You may arrive in Grenada with your private boat of Yacht. I would recommend a visit with your boat or yacht to Carriacou. It is considered by many a Paradise for Caribbean Sailing Vacations.

Getting around on the Island of Grenada
Guided city bus tours are very popular among tourists to visit St George’s attractions and the rest of the island.
Buses and taxis are also recommended to go around the island. And of course the eternal rental car always easy and giving you more freedom to visit the island by yourself.
The neighboring island of Carriacou is a short flight away or can also be reached by ferry.
If you don’t have the time to stay there, it can be visited on a one day tour.
Carriacou is more laid back than Grenada and an excellent spot for Grenada Snorkeling and scuba diving. The finest beach is Anse La Roche.
Shopping
Around St George’s waterfront Carenage or at the airport you’ll find many Duty Free Shops with a variety of products and souvenirs.
While in St George’s, the capital enjoy Saturday morning Market. It is mind boggling the variety of tropical fruits as papayas, bananas, oranges, plantains and many others.
Here you’ll find souvenirs to take home like baskets of nutmeg and other local spices; handmade dolls and handicrafts.
In the bigger stores the best buys are Batik and screen printed textiles as well as handmade wood carvings.
