Holbox Island Off the Yucatan Coast

Holbox Island is a small island on the north coast of Quintana Roo, a Mexican state in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is an example of the most beautiful Mexican beaches.

It is approximately 43 Km long and is separated from the mainland by a shallow pond.

It is part of an ecological reserve of “Yum Balam” for the protection of the area’s flora and fauna.

The name means “black Hole’ in the Yucatec language of the Mayans. It is pronounced “Holbosh”

Caribbean Books and more...

This is actually a Caribbean fishing village. The streets are unpaved and no cars are seen there.

People move by foot or with small golf carts. It is almost unknown to the regular visitors to Cancun Beaches or Playa del Carmen, therefore it is still unspoiled.

I don’t think it will last for long, as people start visiting and the word spreads about the beautiful shallow beaches made of white sands bathed by the blue turquoise of the Gulf of Mexico meeting the Caribbean Sea.

The waters are swimmers friendly and a very good place to come for a Family Vacation.

The Laguna Yalahau separating the island from the mainland is surrounded by mangroves, where flamingoes feed during the summer season.

Holbox Island is home to about 1,500 inhabitants making a living from fishing. The fishermen catch large snappers, groupers and bonitos.

Some times during season they catch lobsters and octopus. The few restaurants on the island, offer the best fresh fish and seafood.

My wife being born in Mexico is crazy for “Ceviche” a cold plate made with raw fish marinated with tomatoes, oil, vinegar, garlic and cilantro. Here we tried one of the best ever. You may also try the fish “empanadas”.

Exotic fruits like papayas, mangoes and pineapples abound on the island. Also coconut grows all over making “Agua de Coco” or coconut water plain or mixed with rum a local drink in great demand.

You will find restaurants with delicious typical cuisine along with national and international dishes.

Whale Sharks

During the summer between June and September whale sharks have been coming to mate in front of the Yucatan Peninsula. The authorities are very wary of keeping the safety of these mammals, so they will keep coming to the area for years.

Holbox has been designated by the Mexican Government as the only port that can offer trips to see the animals.

The tourist guides are well prepared to keep the safety of the human and animal visitors. There are many restrictions about Scuba diving equipment that may frighten the animals

Getting there is easy. There is a ferry from the town of Chiquila on the mainland. You may get there by bus from Merida or Cancun or by a rented car using the Merida-Cancun Freeway.

By air from Cancun and Playa del Carmen via a Cessna five seats small plane of Aerosaab. There is a small airstrip to accommodate these flights.

The island offers spectacular sunsets seen from the exotic beaches. There are many Romantic Getaways in the form of bungalows with the typical pleasures of the Caribbean.

The island is unspoiled making a perfect habitat for exotic wildlife like dolphins, flamingos all moving around while the sun sets in the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Casa Sandra Hotel Holbox

One of Sandra’s aspiration as an author was to be able to write by the sea. Her dream place had to be isolated, serene and the sea should provide ever changing shades of blue from turquoise to deep indigo.

On one memorable day, she landed in Cancun, and her attraction to the land of the Mayas was immediate and overwhelming.

Little did she know then that her dream place was right there on an island where Mayas lived from time immemorial: Holbox Island… little did she know till she disembarked on this enchanting island.

Nothing she ever saw was more delightful than the game nature effortlessly played with colors, the charm of the people who lived there, the barefoot fisherman with golden sparking smiles and the women weaving rainbow “hamacas” while wearing high heels stoutly implanted into the sand.

Xaloc Resort Holbox Island

Xaloc Resort is a little ecotourism hotel situated at one of the amazing white sand beaches, on the heavenly island of Holbox.

Juan Félix Sánchez came from Mallorca to Mexico years ago, in the hope to find the ideal place to build his home. However he found something more than a beautiful place... he found Holbox.

exotic

An island where it is easy to forget civilization with its noisy traffic, pollution, stress, rush people are daily confronted...and most importantly you are able to forget about time.

Looking to share this fascinating hidden place of Mexico with others, he did not only design his home, but he built up Xaloc, a little hotel where everybody is invited. Those who wish to rest of the city and enjoy only the noises of the island... and nature.

Xaloc is not only a beautiful hotel, it is more than that. Xaloc is a unique place where each one of its corners is special and each one of its details is fascinating.

Every bungalow indicates the love, care and dedication they have been built with, to host everybody as he deserves.

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit idyllic Holbox Island when visiting Yucatan, Mexico. A great Honeymoon destination.
