Grand Cayman Island is the largest of the three Cayman Islands at about 196 km² and contains the capital George Town.
It is part of the Caribbean British Territories. This island has no rivers or lakes, so all the water needs are covered by desalinization of the sea waters.
The advantage of not having any rivers flowing into the sea is that the waters of the sea are absolutely crystal clear.
Spectacular aerial view of Grand Cayman Island Beaches
Grand Cayman Island is a routine stop for Cruises on their Western Caribbean itineraries. Most of the Cruise Lines serving the Caribbean will stop here for the delight of travelers. The island is well prepared for tourism from all over the world.
The main tourist attraction is a God given present to the island, the Seven Mile Beach, a long stretch of white sand and blue waters beach, that is the first place tourists want to visit when arriving to Grand Cayman. Many resorts are located here.
West side district
Most of Grand Cayman Island development is on the west side where the capital of George Town and Owen Roberts International Airport are located. In this part of town you may find restaurants, fast food chains, night clubs and resorts. The eastern part is less populated and there you’ll find restaurants specializing in Local Cuisine.

West Bay
West Bay has a Turtle Farm featuring also a few Blue Iguanas. This is one of the rarest lizards in the word, found only on the Cayman Islands.
The majority of the Green Sea Turtles are raised for their meat. West Bay has some limestone formations called by locals “Hell”. Merchandise “from Hell” can be purchased there.
Rum Point is another fantastic place to visit while on the island. You can drive there or catch a ferry over to the point. It is a great place to sit and relax in the sun. You can also rent kayaks and paddle around the beach.
Swimming with the Stingrays
Stingray City is just a short boat ride from the northern coast of Grand Cayman. It is made of a series of shallow sand bars. In this area abound the stingrays and visitors can feed them and pet them. This is a great attraction for kids. Some of the stingray can grow to a meter wide and are used to being handled and fed.
Swimming with the stingrays is an incredible experience. As they come closer to you they actually beg for squid by flapping their “wings” which brush up against your body. The feel of their skin is like velvet. The only part of their body that isn’t soft is a section right down their back that feels like sandpaper. Don’t miss an opportunity to interact with these animals.
Hiking in Grand Cayman
In the center of the island you’ll find the Mastic Trail, a hiking trail where you will find all animals and vegetation intrinsic to the Cayman Islands like the Mastic Tree, the Blue Iguana, the Green Parrot and the Agouti among others. You may also visit here the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Gardens.
You can find on the southern district (city) of Bodden Town the historic house of Pedro St James. This place is considered the birthplace of democracy on the Cayman Islands.
Grand Cayman is by far the Mecca of diving and Caribbean Snorkeling. The exotic beaches are brilliant and surrounded by crystal waters where snorkeling and scuba diving in the coral reefs is ideal. The abundance of colorful marine life is awe inspiring.
Let me mention again Seven Mile Beach which is the highlight of your visit to Grand Cayman. A short swim away from its white sands you’ll encounter the most magnificent coral reefs featuring fish of all types and colors like stoplight parrotfish, queen parrotfish, sergeant majors, needlefish, damselfish, blue tang, snapper, squirrelfish, butterfly fish, angelfish, glassy sweepers, triggerfish, , jewfish, filefish, puffers, wrasse, grouper, and more.
There are other snorkeling sites like Eden’ Rock and Devil’s Grotto. The visit here is a little difficult because you have to enter the ocean through a ladder built on the rock, but if you can do it, what you find there is worth the effort. The corals here contain many tunnels and the snorkelers can swim through the dark caves.

Hi. I'm Captain Mark and I am the owner and operator of Absolute Divers Ltd. After working for years on the "cattle boats" here in Cayman, I just didn’t think diving with 30 of your new best friends was much fun, so about 5 years ago I started the company with the idea of offering a personal diving and snorkeling experience to small groups and families.
I have been diving for over 20 years. After learning to dive in the 42F waters of the Bay of Fundy NS, I am a little spoiled now after 4000 dives in the 84F waters of Grand Cayman. I became a dive instructor when I moved to Grand Cayman in 1996. I hold an RYA. 200-ton offshore Yacht master license for which I trained in Southampton, UK.
