This tiny isle is located 27 km or 17 miles east of Puerto Rico and 19 km or 12 miles west of St Thomas USVI and its area is 11 km or 7 miles long by 5 km or 3 miles wide.

There are a few little cays surrounding this island and they all form the Municipality of Culebra, Puerto Rico. Among them the most important are: Culebita, Cayo Norte, Cayo Ballena, Geniqui, Cayo de Luis Peña, Las Hermanas, Cayos Lobo and Lobito, Botijuela, and Alcarraza.

The capital city of Dewey is the home of practically all 2,000 inhabitants of of the island

The US Fish and Wildlife Service protect the area as a nature reserve. This island is one of very few nesting places for the Giant Sea Turtle in the US. The Culebra national Wildlife Refuge protects many sea birds for the delight of visitors.

Culebrita is the largest of the Cays and it features the most beautiful beaches with flagrant white sands and such clear waters that the visibility is almost infinite. The Culebrita Lighthouse still stands there even though it is closed to the public.

The town of Dewey is the capital of Culebra Puerto Rico

Getting there

You can fly from the city airport in San Juan called Isla Grande Airport in the Miramar area direct to Culebra. Or drive to Fajardo on the easternmost point of Puerto Rico and take a ferry that offers schedule service to the island. Or maybe you’d like to rent a private boat in Fajardo and use it for a day tour to the island and its beaches.

Beaches of Culebra

Flamenco Beach is by far the most popular beach on the island. Discovery Channel has declared Flamenco Beach as the second most beautiful beach in the world. The white sands stretch all over the bay and the sun seems never to abandon this beach. There are facilities for picnic, family reunions and a campground. This is the only place on the island where camping is allowed.

The beach located on the northwest end of the island, is idyllic for Snorkeling, swimming and sunbathing. Here you can find many kiosks offering all kind of amenities, like chairs, umbrellas while others sell drinks and Piña Coladas. There is also a Restaurant open in this beach. You’ll find enough shade around the Sea Grape trees to sit down, take a rest and take a bite.

Culebrita - You can get to this cay by kayaking and spend a great day of swimming in this splendid beach. The cay is located between the big island and St Thomas.

Luis Peña Beach - Is located on the north side of the cay by the same name. What characterizes this beach is that it is very quiet and snorkeling is great on its waters.

Resaca Beach - Is famous for turtle watching, also called Marejada or Turtle Watch Beach.

Melones Beach and Tamarindo Beach - Are great for snorkelers. They can be reached by foot from town.

Punta Soldado- This is a lovely calm beach great for swimming and snorkeling. You may have a great view of neighboring Vieques from this beach.

Zoni Beach Is located on the northeast and from there you have a great view of Culebrita, Cayo Norte and St Thomas.
