Cozumel Mexico

About Cozumel Mexico they say that it has a Mexican heart and a Caribbean Soul.

It is located close to the eastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, across the Mayan Riviera just a short ferry ride away from Playa del Carmen.

It is definitely a Caribbean Island and the most important of the Mexican Caribbean.

Your stay on the island will be a memorable one since the people are extremely nice and represent the best of Mexican Hospitality. It is the largest Mexican Island and home to 90,000 inhabitants, making it also the most populated.

Cozumel Mexico is world famous for its coral reefs attracting visitors from North America and Europe to its shores. There is an array of Caribbean Sports available, among them Caribbean Snorkeling, Scuba Diving, Kayaking and many more.

Even though Cozumel Mexico is well known for its beaches and crystal blue waters, the interior of the island, mostly undeveloped is a sanctuary for endemic birds that have never left the island and its jungle and swamps. This is a dream for nature lovers on a Caribbean Ecotourism trip.

Cozumel is a routine stop for all cruises to the Western Caribbean Islands

I’d like to mention the Chankanaab National Park and the Punta Sur Ecological Reserve.

This area on the south of the island is protected and features the Colombia Lagoon acting as shelter to many endangered animals such as marine turtles.

The Mayans are believed to have settled the island over 2000 years ago harvesting the rich abundance of seafood for commercial use.

The ocean also supplied a large number of other valuable items such as shark teeth, stingray spines and seashells that were used for ritual purposes.

World famous explorer Jacques Cousteau and his team discovered the wall of reefs just off the island's shoreline and declared them to be one of the most incredible diving destinations in the world. After that, diving exploded on the island.

By 1970, Cozumel's population quickly grew to 10,000 and with the influx of tourism this once desolate island has now become the jewel of the Mexican Caribbean.

When you land in Cozumel Mexico, you are on the city of San Miguel where all kind of vendor’s stands abound and you are approached by many locals offering from scuba diving experience to inexpensive hotels and guest houses. Beware of “tourists traps”

There are numerous restaurants, cafes and shops selling everything that is carried on the mainland so shopping is not a problem and one does not have to leave the island.

In fact some people prefer to shop in Cozumel instead of Playa del Carmen although the two are quite similar.

Cozumel Mexico Weather

The temperature averages 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher during July and August when it reaches 90 degrees and cooler in December and January when it drops to 70 degrees. During the winter months it could be cooler, cloudy and windy. It usually rains in the afternoon but just for a little while. Water temperature is about 77-82 degrees year round.

Getting there

By Air

You may get to Cozumel from Mexico City, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Belize and Guatemala. Occasionally there are schedule flights from the mainland USA.

By Cruise Most Cruise Lines serving the Caribbean include Cozumel Mexico on their Western Caribbean itineraries. Definitely Cozumel is the most important cruise destination to the Western Caribbean Islands.

Shopping here for cruise visitors is a paradise, since the area is considered part of Mexico’s Duty Free Zone. Also remember that in Mexico' local markets, bargaining is part of the culture. In other words never pay the price originally ask.

By Ferry

There a few ferries crossing from Playa del Carmen on a regular basis. Many visitors go for a day tour to Cozumel once they are in the Mayan Riviera and Playa del Carmen or Cancun.

Caribbean Snorkeling is one of the preferred sports in Cozumel

Scuba diving

All you need to do is to walk around the area near the docks, pop your head into a dive shop and ask what they have leaving for where and when. If the time or price doesn't suit you, just go to the dive operator on the next corner.

Diving is done on practically every corner of the island. The southwestern coast is calmer and where many reefs diffuse the current that runs between Cozumel Mexico and the mainland. The constant currents clear the waters and visibility is perfect, sometime 100 to 200 feet.

Cozumel's walls and reefs are known as a spur and groove reef system. They have been sculpted over thousands of years and are characterized by a complex network of caves, holes and canyons or sand chutes that run perpendicular to the coast.

Now, for more experience divers the east or outer coast the reefs running deep into the ocean will be considered the best experience.

Caribbean Snorkeling

In the south where the Colombia lagoon is, the waters with nutrient rich material pass on to the sea and moved by the currents keep feeding the reefs for centuries.

Snorkeling is absolutely gorgeous here. You’ll be admired by so many fish of all kinds and species.

I recommend the following diving shops in Cozumel Mexico

Scuba Du

In 1986, Jorge De La Fuente and his brother, Jose, opened a small One boat dive shop called Scuba Scuba, in Cozumel, Mexico. They had traveled to Cozumel after receiving their dive training and becoming dive instructors in Dallas, Texas.

The business grew and in 1992 they changed the name of their business to what is now known as one of the best dive stores in the Caribbean, Scuba Du.
