Boat Building The country of Grenada, and its two islands are independent since 1974 and still belong to the British Commonwealth. The population of the two smaller islands is about 6,000 and is mainly of African origin with some Scottish influence. They are known by their sea fairing skills and boat building. This paradise is rich in tradition and many customs were handed down from their African and Scottish ancestors. In the village of Windward they still build sailing boats using the traditional methods passed down by the Scottish settlers. There is a yearly Regatta held during the months of July and August, featuring these boats.
