British Virgin Islands

Caribbean's Little Secrets

The British Virgin Islands are located north and northeast of the US Virgin Islands. They are only a 30 minutes flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico or a 30 minutes ferry ride from St Thomas USVI.

They are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Peter Island, Norman and Jost Van Dyke and many smaller islets and cays all with exotic beaches.

Road Town, Tortola is the Capital of this British Territory

The islands are caressed by the trade winds all year round, so the climate is mild and never to hot averaging in the lower 80’s degrees Fahrenheit.

Tortola is the largest of the surrounding islands. Road Town is the capital of Tortola and the capital of the British Virgin Islands as well. It is the center of government and financial center. The island is host of Sage Mountain national park a fabulous Rain Forest and is the tallest peak on the islands.

Virgin Gorda or in Spanish “Fat Virgin” is known for the beach called bath. Its formations of granite boulders form sea pools ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving, surrounded on both side by exotic beaches.

Spanish Town is the financial and business center of the island which hosts the Gorda Yacht Harbor featuring stores, banks, restaurants and above all many yachts of all sizes visiting this awe inspiring site on their sailing vacations.exotic

Anegada is known for its white sand beaches. This is a paradise seen only in the movies or on your dreams. Snorkeling or scuba diving is a must in its magnificent coral reefs.

• West of St John USVI, besides Sir Francis Drake Channel, are the smaller islands. Just to mention a few: Ginger, Salt, Peter, Norman and Cooper Islands.

Norman Island remembered from the famous tales of Treasure Island. It is known for its colorful fish and lots or corals.

Salt Island is uninhabited and is known for the Rhone, a shipwreck sunken of its coast, Divers come here from all over the world.

Peter Island is a private resort featuring the most beautiful beaches, restaurants, Spa and all facilities. There are ferries going back and forth from Tortola.

Cooper Island is visited by many boaters due to its safe harbor and great beaches while Ginger Island next to it is almost undeveloped.

Getting to the British Virgin Islands

By air

Many travelers arrive to Tortola’s Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) from neighboring islands like St Johns, Antigua or San Juan, Puerto Rico.

There are no direct flights from the United States or Canada, so passengers that when to arrive by air will do that through those islands.

By ferry

There is schedule ferry service fro Charlotte Amalie in St Thomas to Road Town in Tortola.

Weather

The British Virgin Islands experience a moderate 40 inches of rainfall annually, which is average when compared to the rest of the Caribbean. Temperatures are also relatively stable, from 73 to 80 in January, and 84 to 89 in July, all in degrees Fahrenheit.
