The Blue Hole Belize is located off the shores of Belize in Central America and is part of the Belize Barrier Reef. This is the second biggest reef in the world behind the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It is by far the number one of Belize Attractions.
Its form is circular with a diameter of 300 meters and more than 120 meters deep. It was formed thousands of years ago.
This site was brought to world attention by Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1971 when he brought his ship, the Calypso, in order to investigate the “Blue Hole”.

Today it is a popular tourist spot especially for those diving lovers.
Once in Belize or any of its islands, make sure you contact a specialist that will take you there. I would not suggest you do it on your own, since there is a lot to see and understand.

The Inland Blue Hole
There is another Belize Blue Hole which is less known to the public. It is located inland next to the capital city of Belmopan. This is like a natural pool and is part of the Herman’s Cave System and administered as a National Park.
This site is available by a few stairs that take you down to the cool blue waters. The site is very popular with the people of Belize and of course, with the tourist that were lucky enough to discover it.
There are parking facilities but they are limited to working hours. The same applies to the Branch River that feeds the pool. The area is spectacular in beauty because of its lush vegetation.
Remember the climate is always warm in Belize, so you can swim here any time during the year.

Scuba Diving in the Blue Hole Belize
Going back to our actual site the very big hole, there are many opportunities for diving. You may travel the world all the way to the South Pacific but, places like this one are rare to find.
Here are a few experts that we recommend for you diving experience in the Blue Hole:
Fifty miles from Caye Caulker, Lighthouse Atoll is the most remote of Belize’s three outer atolls. But your 6:00 am departure and 2-hour boat ride are rewarded by what some say is the best diving in the Caribbean, including the marquee dive to the Great Blue Hole.
Belize Diving Services offers two distinctly different experiences on this atoll. Monday is a moderate dive day with a daily maximum depth of about 80 ft.
You will explore the atoll’s diverse ecosystem, characterized by many apex predators and spectacular coral formations. We usually go to the more pristine and less crowded dive sites such as Sponge Bob, Angel Wall, and Painted Wall. Sponges and other soft coral at these sites are huge.
