Anegada Island
"The Drowned Island"
Anegada Island a British territory, is one of the British Virgin Islands. It is a gem of an island surrounded by idyllic beaches. It is also known as “The Drowned Island”. Christopher Columbus named it that way because Anegada is the translation to Drowned in Spanish. The island is made of coral sand and the beaches are among of the most beautiful on the Planet.

The island itself is just 10 miles long by 2 and half miles wide. It is guarded by an eighteen mile reef called the Horseshoe Reef that protect its waters and is one of the worlds largest.Deserted Beaches Anegada Island is distanced by geography from the rest of the BVI, which makes it a very low populated island, less than 200 inhabitants. The beaches are so deserted that you may walk miles and not see another set of footprints on the sand. Getting there The best way to get to Anegada is flying to San Juan, Puerto Rico and from there catch a flight on American Airlines, Continental Airlines or LIAT to Tortola Beef Island’s Airport (EIS). Once in Tortola you may take any other charters that fly the 11 minutes ride to Anegada. You can do the same from St Thomas USVI. Getting around Anegada Island Taxis are available to take you to any of the secluded exotic beaches. Car rental and bicycle rental are also available. This is a small island, so, any of the options is fine with me. Anegada Beaches Most of them on the north shore, where you’ll find miles upon miles of white powdered beaches surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. As mentioned before, the beaches are protected by the reef, making it an ideal spot for swimming, Caribbean Snorkeling, Scuba Diving or surfing. Anegada is also well known for its Caribbean Fishing. Some of the beaches are Flash of Beauty, Bones Bright and Cow Wreck Beach. Cow Wreck's exquisite beach is the best in all of the BVI. It is an ideal place for wading and swimming. The water near shore is only waist deep with a perfect sand bottom. Loblolly Bay is one of the most visited spots on Anegada, mainly because of its great snorkeling and diving just off-shore. This beach was one of many in the BVI recently voted ‘world-class’ by Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine. The beaches are dotted by all kind of charming beach bars offering from cool drinks to seafood. To mention just a few: Anegada Reef Hotel, Potter’s by the Sea and the Lobster Trap among others.

The AnchoragesBetween Setting Point and Pomato Point is a favorite spot for anchoring your yacht or boat and spend some time on the beach enjoying any of the bars or restaurants.
Salt Ponds Most of the island’s interior are covered by salt ponds, being the largest the Flamingo Pond and as the name indicates they are populated by flamingos. About one fourth of the island is covered by those salt ponds. The Settlement Is the main town on the island and most of Anegadians live here. In the recent years many have been populating the rest of the island by building their homes and villas near the coast. The Settlement is a fishing village with a small post office a bakery a clinic and some government offices. Anegada Island is known for several treats, Caribbean lobster, miles upon miles of deserted beaches, snorkeling, flamingos, and bone fishing. Lobster in Anegada It is known that the lobster in Anegada is among the best in the Caribbean. You may find many beach restaurants. To mention just a few, the Anegada Beach Club, the Neptune’s Treasure on the south shore and several beach bars on the north shore.

Anegada is the ideal place to disconnect from the “real” world of finances and news. Whether you come for the day or to spend a few days on the island it is worth a visit. Once on The British Virgin Islands of Tortola or Virgin Gorda the distances are very small. On a small charter plane or any of the chartered ferries you can be there in minutes.
